In the summer of 2003, during a regional athletics event in the United Kingdom, a middle-distance runner named Mark Donahue — not a household name, not a headline act — was warming up near the infield when a bee found him. Not a dramatic swarm. One bee. The ordinary, uninvited kind.

Donahue, by multiple witness accounts, was not a calm man around insects. He'd mentioned it to teammates before. What happened next unfolded in front of timing officials who were actively running calibration tests on newly installed electronic sensors positioned along a 100-meter stretch of the warm-up track.
